Billericay Chess Club – History (May 2013)

Billericay Chess Club was formed in April 1978 when Ian Fuller (still our secretary) and his friend Brian Morgan, then members of Brentwood Chess Club, advertised in various newsagents in Billericay to see what support there would be for a chess club in the town.  At the meeting, in Ian’s house, there were players from the Wickford, Laindon and  Chelmsford clubs as well as other interested enthusiasts, all of whom lived in Billericay.  It was decided to form a club and the first meeting took place at the old cricket club pavilion in Mountnessing Road on 17th May 1978.

Soon after these early meetings the club moved to the annex of the old Archer Hall, which was where the Emmanuel Church is now in the Laindon Road and we met there until July 1980. We then moved to the old Fold (now demolished to make way for the Waitrose car park) and then moved on when the Arts Centre (Fold) moved to the old Quilters School site in 1994.
The club has always played to a good standard and joined both the Essex League and North Essex Leagues soon after its formation and the Southend League in 2009.

Our teams have won the North Essex Cup as early as 1980, the North Essex Plate in 1996 and 2011, the Essex League Div 2 in 1998, the North Essex Div 2 in 1986,1993,1995,1996,2002,2005 and 2013 and the North Essex Div 3 in 1999, 2010 and 2011.
Billericay CC won the Southend League division 3 at the first attempt and were promoted in 2010 only to follow that by winning division 2 the following year 2011 for a further promotiom to division one. A second team was entered into division 3 in 2011 and that team also won promotion at the first attempt.
Our top teams usually play in the North Essex League Divs 1,2 and 3 and the Southend League Divs 1 and 2.
Some of our members also play in the Essex Daytime Competition, which is played in the players’ homes during the weekday afternoons of the Winter, with good results and several titles, including both League titles in 2009.

Only two of the original members have played for the club since it’s foundation. Charles Newman (Chairman and Team Captain) and Ian Fuller (Secretary). Other long serving members include Chris van Veen (Treasurer since 1999) and Hugh Tanton (Tournaments officer since 1989).

Of our past members we are particularly proud of the Cundy brothers (Mark and Nigel) who were strong players and their sister Brenda (all went on to Oxford University) and Jonathan Hannah (who won a title at the British Championships and went on to Cambridge University). All home grown talent and all educated at King Edward V1 School Chelmsford.
We meet at the Arts Centre on Wednesdays at 7.30pm from late September to May.
