Saturday 1st & 2nd Teams

Benfleet Football Club are looking forward to an exciting 2007/08 season. The 1st Team find themselves back in the top division of the LFC Insurance Group Essex Olympian League, now renamed the Premier Division. The last time we played in the top flight was in season 1995/96, and our only championship year was 1988/89, although we did finish 2nd in seasons 72/73, 73/74 & 81/82. All that success was a long time ago but I know that Ben & Steve believe the team can do themselves and the club proud this year. So may be we can expect to be challenging for a top 5 finish at least.

Saturday Vet’s

The Vets continue to run two teams in the Essex Ridley’s Veterans League on Saturday’s. New players are always welcome, especially if they are young Vet’s. Is that a contradiction in terms?

Youth Teams

We are pleased to announce that Danny Clare’s Under 16 team will be the first Benfleet youth team to play in the Eastern Junior Alliance League. For the first time the league have been allowed to include youth teams from Step 7 clubs (ie intermediate). As Benfleet have often lost players and teams to this league in the past, it is pleasing that we can now compete. It is also pleasing that we have a team capable of competing at this higher level. Danny will be holding Trials for this team, and details will be put on the web-site, once date and times are known. Now we can offer this route, we hope to improve the standard of our older players and develop a true feeder system to our 1st & reserve Olympian league teams.

Joining this league demands greater commitment from players and management. The games are against stronger teams, players have to react as senior players, and the travelling for games involves much longer distances. However, the boys should be playing on better pitches with better officials in charge of the games.

Of our youth teams the U14’s were probably the most successful, with the ‘A’ team managed by Dave Saxton winning the Premier Divison of the Southend & District  League, and narrowly losing in the semi-final of the Essex County Cup. Additionally John Taylor’s U14 B team won Division 2 of the Southend & District League and gained promotion to Division One.

Ladies Team

The Ladies team are preparing for their second season in the Essex County Women’s League. They found the inaugural season to be hard in terms of regular commitment, but rewarding as they improved a great deal through the season. The team are still looking to appoint a long term coach and manager, although for the immediate future Dave Dady will continue to help the team.

Mini-Soccer

The Mini-Soccer section is developing well, and we currently have around 40 players under the age of 8 who train at the club each Saturday morning. This will form the basis of our U7 & U8 teams this current year. Our under 9 and under 10 teams are both hoping to run an additional team for the coming season, so any new players in this age group are welcome.

Girls section

We continue our aim to eventually run a girl’s team in the mini-soccer league. A number of girl’s currently train with our Academy on a Saturday morning
9:30 – 11:00 am. Newcomers are always welcome.

an you Help
Benfleet are always on the lookout for volunteers to assist in many areas e.g. match day stewardship, administration help, practical help with plumbing, decorating, electrical, tiling, building, labouring etc.
If you can offer the club a minimum of 4 hours of your time per season, then your help will be gratefully accepted. We take the view that 100 members giving up 4 hours per year, represents a workforce of 400 hour ie 10 man weeks of work. Please make it known in which area you can help, and the club will add you to a register of helpers.
